World Triathlon

Athletes With A Disability (AWAD) will now be known as paratriathletes.  After meeting with a representative from the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) at the ITU Congress last November in Madrid, and on the wish of the athletes themselves, it was decided that the AWAD category would now be termed paratriathlon.  With the new title comes a designated Paratriathlon Committee, which will sit within the ITU family.

This is an important step forward in our aspirational goal of obtaining programme status for triathlon in the Paralympic Games, said ITU Vice President Sarah Springman.  Combining the technical expertise of the Paratriathon Committee members with the Presidents and Board members political experience of lobbying for inclusion in major games should see us prepare a strong candidature file for submission to the IPC later this year.

The main task of the committee will be to oversee the development of paratriathlon within the triathlon community by growing participation, developing elite performance, evolving events and building profile. Headlining this development will be the inclusion of a paratriathlon category in the London and Gold Coast Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship events.

Each continent is represented on the committee, with ITU Director of Sport Development, Libby Burrell, being responsible for Africa.  ITU staff member Thanos Nikopoulos will work closely with this committee and the ITU Board ensuring implementation of their objectives. 

A recent poll of the 122 nations that are members of ITU found that there are over 750 active paratriathletes in the world, from over 40 countries.

Los Atletas con Una Discapacidad (AWAD) sern a partir de ahora conocidos como paratriatletas. Tras reunirse con un representante del Comit Paralmpico Internacional (IPC) en el ltimo Congreso celebrado en Noviembre en Madrid y por deseo de los propios atletas, se decidi que la categora AWAD se denominara ahora paratriatln. Junto con el nuevo nombre tambin se ha designado el Comit de Paratriatln, el cual se asentar en el seno de la familia ITU.

Este es un importante paso adelante en nuestras aspiraciones para lograr el objetivo de conseguir que el triatln forme parte del programa en los Juegos Paralmpicos, dijo la Vicepresidenta de la ITU Sarah Springman. Combinando la experiencia tcnica de los miembros del Comit de Paratriatln con la experiencia poltica del presidente y miembros del ejecutivo para influir a favor de la inclusin del triatln en los principales juegos ofrecer una buena imagen de nosotros para solicitar la inclusin en los Juegos Paralmpicos durante este ao.

La principal labor del comit ser la de supervisar el desarrollo del paratriatln dentro de la comunidad del triatln, aumentando la participacin, desarrollando el rendimiento de la lite, mejorando las competiciones y creando perfiles. Lo principal de este desarrollo ser la inclusin de una categora paratriatln en las pruebas de los Campeonatos del Mundo ITU Dextro Energy de Londres y Gold Coast.
