That was spectacular. Tonight, the world was able to join in a magnificent tribute to the athletes and the Olympic spirit. It was an unforgettable and moving ceremony that celebrated the imagination, originality and energy of the Beijing Games, said IOC President Jacques Rogge.

After the stunning shows, the march of nations began, starting as usual with Greece.  A number of triathletes were marching behind their country flags including defending Olympic champion Kate Allen of Austria, Swede Lisa Norden, Flora Duffy of Bermuda, members of the French team and the U.S. team including Laura Bennett, Julie Ertel, Hunter Kemper, Matt Reed and Jarrod Shoemaker.  Also in the American contingent were several NBA starts including Kobe Bryant and LeBron James.

A number of other big names were in attendance including tennis superstar Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer who carried in the Swiss flag, and German flag bearer Dirk Nowitzki.  But the biggest cheer was reserved for the home team who marched in last, led by Chinese basketball superstar Yao Ming.

The evening climaxed with the arrival of the Olympic flame which was paraded around the stadium, on ground and in the air, before being lit in grand style.  The night sky was then illuminated with a dazzling display of fireworks, capping off a night of spectacular moments.

Were now just eight days until the womens triathlon competition, which will go on Monday August 18th.  The men will race the next day on Tuesday August 19th.
