Triathlon’s third appearance at the Olympic Games will be this Monday and Tuesday at the triathlon venue in the Changping district of Beijing. The course format is a one lap 1500m open water swim, 6 lap 40km bike and a 4 lap 10km run. There are 55 athletes on the start line for both the men’s and women’s competitions, an increase from 50 since the previous Olympic Games in Athens.

Of the 110 athletes on the start list there are 37 countries represented. Of the 55 women on the line only 3 have competed in both of Triathlons’ previous appearances at the games - Anja Dittmer (GER), Kiyomi Niwata (JPN), and Mariana Ohata (BRA). 38 of the women and 36 of the men are making their first appearance at the Olympic Games. Simon Whitfield (CAN) and Kate Allen (AUT) are the only past gold medallists competing in Beijing.

Although the start numbers have already been assigned, these numbers only assign transition positions. Positions for the pontoon will be drawn according to Olympic rankings after the athlete briefing on Saturday the 16th. Details of the selection will be released on triathlon.org after the draw is complete.

For those without access to live televised coverage of the races ITU will be providing live text updates of each race. Full results as well as race reports and photo gallery will also be provided race on triathlon.org.
