BG Triathlon WC Calendar Changes

Last month ITU announced to its athletes, coaches and federations that the Chiapas BG Triathlon World Cup, originally scheduled to be hosted by Asdesporte and the Mexican Triathlon Federation on October 12, had been removed from the 2008 BG Triathlon World Cup calendar.  Shortly after, it was decided the season finale in Huatulco would be moved forward to October 26.

Despite a successful site visit to Chiapas earlier in the year where everything appeared to be in perfect order with the government partners and the local organizing committee, financial issues are now the primary reason for cancellation.

“It’s incredibly unfortunate for us to make this announcement.  Because of the inability of the state and city to meet agreed financial requirements, we’re left with no option.  We sincerely regret the inconvenience this cancellation causes for our athletes, coaches and federations,” said Sheila O’Kelly, Director of the BG Triathlon World Cup series.

With the cancellation of Chiapas, a lengthy gap of time was left in between world cups and would
force athletes to wait almost two months between Lorient (September 27) and the season finale in Huatulco.  Rather than prolong the season, ITU requested and the LOC has agreed to move the Huatulco date forward and have confirmed the date of October 26th.
