Caledon Welcomes the World...

Caledon, ON With only four days left before the start of the 2005 HSBC ITU CALEDON PAN AMERICAN CUP TRIATHLON, organizers of the event are busy making final preparations. Athletes are now steadily arriving from nearly ten different nations and from every province across our country.

The one-day event will take place at the Royal Ambassador Banquet Hall located on Innis Lake Rd.  Not only will this event serve as one of only four International triathlons in Canada this year, but it will also play host to the Canadian Junior National Championships, and an age group World Championship Qualifier. Caledon truly is welcoming the worlds best!

Already in the area is 2004 Athens Olympian, Brent McMahon of Victoria, British Columbia. No stranger to Ontario, McMahon was a two-time National Junior Champion (both times when the events were hosted in Ontario). After an impressive Olympic experience for the young 23 year-old, he has been racing in fine form across the globe on the International Triathlon Union World Cup series. McMahon will be tough to beat come Saturday.

Samantha McGlone, also training and living out of the National Triathlon Training Centre in Victoria, BC arrives tomorrow. Coming off of a 6th place finish at last weekends ITU Edmonton World Cup, this Canadian Olympian looks to be in excellent condition for this weekends event.

The Town of Caledon has proclaimed this week as HSBC Triathlon Week.

On behalf of the Members of Council, I am delighted to welcome competitors, supporters, officials and volunteers for the ITU Caledon Pan American Cup Triathlon to our community, said Marolyn Morrison, Mayor of the Town of Caledon. I encourage residents and visitors to witness the passion and dedication of the athletes by including this exciting event in their weekend plans.

Athletes will continue with pre-race preparations through Friday at various locations around the region. McMahon, McGlone, Doug Friman (USA) and two of the Canadas top Junior National contenders will be available for discussion at our Press Conference this Thursday July 28, 12:00pm EST at the Royal Ambassador Banquet Hall.
