Clarke, Warriner tops in Scotland

Beijing Olympian Will Clarke returned to form at today’s Corus Elite Series in Strathclyde Park, Scotland the venue for the triathlon at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Clarke raced through the super sprint format competition, cruising through his heat before pipping compatriot Alistair Brownlee, for the gold in the final. Having exited the 300-meter open water swim off the pace, Clarke was forced to chase down Brownlee during the 7-kilometer bike, finally catching him with just one of the three 2.5-kilometer laps to go. However, a swift final transition saw Clarke steal an early lead on the 2-kilometer run and he was able to hold off the charging Brownlee for victory. Dann Brook made it an all-British podium with a third place finish.

The result was a welcome return to the podium for Clarke following a disappointing Olympic Games where he finished 14th.

“It was nice to be out and racing well after the Olympics. I haven’t really trained that much in the past couple of weeks, but I was so fit going into the Games that I’ve been able to stay competitive. Beijing was very disappointing for me as I was in the form of my life; but I just didn’t show it on the day.”

In the women’s race, New Zealand’s Samantha Warriner buried the demons from her Olympic Games, where she finished 16th, with an excellent performance. The Commonwealth Games silver medallist held off German Olympian Christine Pilz and Britain’s Jodie Swallow to take first place.

“It was great to come and race in Scotland in such a good field,” she said. “I had a horrid time out in Beijing so to come away with a win in my first race back fills me with confidence for the final races of the year. Strathclyde Park is such a beautiful place to hold a triathlon; it’s going to be a fantastic venue for the Commonwealth Games.”

Glasgow’s Kerry Lang overcame a leg injury from her heat to place 5th. When changing from bike to run in her first race she slipped and cut her leg on the gears of her bike, however, thankfully much of the damage was superficial.

Scotland’s junior world champion Kirsty McWilliam, finished 10th in the final. Having been held up in the swim she was unable to bridge back up to the leaders but ran strongly to pull herself through the field.

El Olímpico en Beijing Will Clarke volvió hoy a la competición en las Coros Elite series en Strathclyde Park, Escocia donde tendrá lugar el triatlón de los Juegos de la Commonwealth.

Clarke corrió en la competición de formato súper sprint, cruzando la meta por delante de su compatriota Alistair Brownlee, para la medalla de oro final. A la salida de los 300 metros del segmento de la natación, Clarke se esforzó por dar caza a Brownlee durante los 7 kilómetros de la bicicleta. Finalmente le atrapó cuando quedaba una de las tres vueltas de 2.5 kilómetros para la meta. Sin embargo, una rápida transición final hizo que sacase una pequeña ventaja a dos kilómetros para el final y fue capaz de aguantar los ataques de Brownlee para hacerse con la victoria. El resultado fue un regreso al podium para Clarke tras una decepcionante actuación en los Juegos Olímpicos donde termino 14º.

“Fue bueno estar fuera y correr bien después de los Juegos Olímpico. Realmente no he entrenado mucho estas dos últimas semanas, pero he mantenido la forma de los Juegos y he sido capaz de estar competitivo. Beijing fue muy decepcionante para mi ya que estaba en la mejor forma de mi vida, pero no lo demostré ese día.”

En la carrera femenina, la neozelandesa Samantha Warriner enterró los demonios de sus Juegos Olímpicos, donde terminó 16º, con una excelente actuación. La medallista de plata de los Juegos de la Commonwealth derrotó a la Olímpica Christine Pilz de Alemania y la británica Jodie Swallow para hacerse con la primera plaza.

“Fue genial venir y correr en Escocia en una categoría tan buena,” dijo ella. “Tuve un cálido descanso en Beijing para conseguir una victoria en mi primera carrera tras los Juegos, lo que me da mucha confianza para las últimas carreras del año. Strathclyde Park es un lugar tan hermoso para albergar un triatlón; será un fantástico lugar para los Juegos de la Cmmonwealth.”

La escocesa Kerry Lang se sobrepuso a una lesión en la pierna para terminar quinta. Cuando cambiaba la bicicleta para pasar a correr en su primera carrera, se resbaló y se cortó la pierna con los cambios de la bicicleta, pero por suerte las heridas eran superficiales.

La campeona del mundo escocesa Kirsty McWilliam, terminó en décima posición. Tras haber perdido tiempo en la natación, fue incapaz de acortar la ventaja de los líderes, pero corrió con solidez para finalizar en la mejor posición.
