World Triathlon

The leaders from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Mauritius and Nigeria met with ITU Staff at Stellenbosch University in Cape Town recently to set a strategic plan in motion for the development of the sport throughout the continent.

Professor Liz Bresson, Sport Science Department of Stellenbosch University was the facilitator for the two day meeting, and she ably led the group through to an ambitious plan to increase the number of NFs in Africa from the current 6 to 20 within 3 years.

The key strategy involves dividing Africa into three zones with a hub for development in each zone.  The three sub-continental zones will be Northern Africa, Central Africa and Southern Africa. 

Triathlon South Africa has offered administration support through its office in Pretoria, and with the support of ITU a facilitator will be hired to take responsibility for establishing viable national federations in each of the three zones.  As early as 2010, sub-continental championships will be held in each zone.
