Ireland goes triathlon crazy

In an event which is only rivalled by Hamburg for atmosphere, home fans crowded the streets to cheer on Irish triathlete Bryan Keane and Felicity Sheedy Ryan from Australia who claimed the European Cup titles at the ETU Cup Race, in Athlone, Ireland. 

Women’s winner, Felicity Sheedy Ryan, claimed victory with a time of 1 hour and 58 minutes and 6 seconds, showing Australian selectors she has the talent to represent her country on the international circuit.

The Australian ran a fantastic race, passing Irish triathlete Aileen Morrison on the final leg.

In the men’s race the Irish winner Bryan Keane finished superbly in a time of 1 hour 45 minutes and 59 seconds. The Irish man and first time championship winner took the experienced field by surprise passing the two Spanish favourites and last year’s title holder, Frenchman Vincent Luis, at the end of the 40km cycle.  Keane powered through to take a clear lead to capture the cup and simultaneously the Irish National title.

This year’s Waterways Ireland triAthlone event was supported by premium sponsor Waterways Ireland, with significant support also provided by Athlone Town Council.

The event also hosted the Defence Forces Sprint Championships.  Derek Nugent, a TriAthlone Race Director and Defence Forces Serving member became the first Irish technical Official at ETU Cup Race.

Waterways Ireland triAthlone had a record number of 2,500 participants take part.  Local crowds filled the medieval streets of Athlone to cheer on the athletes competing in Ireland’s biggest triathlon, one of Europe’s top 10 triathlons and host for The European Championships in 2010.

Liam Heavin, Chairman, Waterways Ireland TriAthlone spoke about the success of the event:
“This was the biggest year yet for Waterways Ireland triAthlone with over triple the number of participants than the European championships.  We are delighted for Irish triathletes Bryan Keane and Aileen Morrison and with the fantastic turnout of thousands cheering on the streets supporting all the athletes. We are already looking forward to hosting next year’s European
Championships in 2010.”

En una prueba solo comparable con el ambiente de Hamburgo, los aficionados llenaron las calles para animar al triatleta irlands Bryan Keane y a la triatleta australiana Felicity Sheedy Ryan quienes lograron el titulo en la Copa de Europa de Triatln ETU de Athlone, Irlanda.

La ganadora femenina, Felicity Sheedy Ryan se hizo con la victoria en un tiempo de 1 hora, 58 minutos y 6 segundos, demostrando a los seleccionadores australianos que tiene talento para representar a su pas en el circuito internacional.

En la carrera masculina el ganador irlands Bryan Keane termin con un tiempo de 1 hora 45 minutos y 59 segundos. El irlands primera vez ganador de la copa tuvo la experiencia necesaria para superar a los dos espaoles favoritos y al ganador del ao pasado, el francs Vincent Luis en el final de los 40km de bicicleta. Keane de manera poderosa se hizo con una clara ventaja para llevarse la copa.

Este ao la prueba del Waterways Ireland triAthlone ha sido patrocinada principalmente por Waterways Ireland y ha recibido un significante apoyo del Ayuntamiento de Athlone.

La prueba tambin alberg el Campeonato Sprint de las Fuerzas de Defensa. Derek Nugent, un Director de Carrera del TriAthlone y miembro del Servicio de las Fuerzas de Defensa se ha convertido en el primer Tcnico Oficial irlands en una carrera de la Copa de Europa ETU.

El Triatln de Athlone Waterways Ireland ha tenido una participacin rcord, con 2.500 participantes. El pblico llen las calles medievales de Athlone para animar a los triatletas participantes en el triatln ms grande de Irlanda, uno de los diez mejores triatlones europeos y que albergar en Campeonato de Europa en 2010.

Este ao ha sido todava ms grande para el Triatln Athlone Waterways Ireland con casi el triple de participantes que en los campeonatos de Europa. Estamos encantados con los triatletas irlandeses Bryan Keane y Aileen Morrison y con la fantstica participacin de miles de personas animando en las calles a todos los atletas. Estamos ya deseando albergar los prximos Campeonatos de Europa en 2010.
