A group of 13 participants from all corners of the globe converged on ITU headquarters in Vancouver for the past three days to attend an ITU Facilitator certification course. In what was the first international course offered, participants hailed from the African, Asian, European and American continents. To date, regional courses have also been presented in each of the five continents.

The ITU Facilitators course aims to educate and prepare coaches and technical officials to be able to facilitate ITU courses in their federations and regions. This intensive three-day programme is a “Train the Trainer” course that is an applied programme in which the ‘learners’ go through all the phases and components of facilitation.  ITU introduced this programme to ensure quality presentation on all levels by those experts chosen to offer ITU education courses in all five regions within ITU.

Norman Brook, Zita Csovelyak, David Markham and Libby Burrell were all present to offer this ‘hands-on’ course to the selected group of coaches and technical officials. This course also included media and sports administration staff from ITU for the first time, expanding ITU’s education programme.  The candidates learn about classroom and practical or applied session time management, communication skills, group facilitation, use of questioning and group management skills.

The ITU course gained high praise from all those who participated.

“The course offered a unique experience not only to increase my level of knowledge, but it also gave me a chance to become more aware of the different functional areas of ITU such as technical and media. I feel I have ve a much better understanding of the concept of development across ITU now,” said Rodrigo Milazzo from Brazil.

“I was excited to have the opportunity to work with such a diverse group of people, and to learn how to deliver courses more effectively and efficiently,” reflected Gale Bernhardt after the course had concluded.

Loreen Barnett, Secretary General of ITU and a participant on the course stated:
“The course validated the concept of continued learning and establishing a consistent approach across all ITU’s education programmes. I would like to extend my thanks to Norman Brook, Zita Csovelyak, David Markham and Libby Burrell for all their hard work in constructing and delivering this course.”
