In 2007, Discovery Channel visited ITU’s World Cup race in Vancouver to shoot and produce a 4-part series on the science behind triathlon.  The stories covered a wide range of topics including the complex timing system, the physiology of the body during a race and how it recovers after a grueling triathlon.  The crew also explored cutting-edge technology in the latest running shoes, wetsuits and bike frames.  It was clear that science touched many areas of triathlon, particularly in high performance.

As the International Federation for the sport, ITU is committed to driving research in the field and is sanctioning the first ever World Conference of Science in Triathlon.  It is hosted by Centro Superior de Idiomas at the University of Alicante and is slated to take place from 24-26 March in Alicante, located in south eastern Spain.

The inaugural conference will bring together experts from around the globe in physical and medical science.  Over three days, the World Conference of Science in Triathlon will explore a range of topics will be presented by prominent keynote speakers including Gregoire Millet of the University of Lausanne, renowned running coach Bobby McGee, Randall Wilber, Senior Sport Physiologist with the United States Olympic Committee and Jan Olbrecht, lecturer at the Coaches Academy in Cologne, Germany and the University of Ghent and the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium.
