Tambin texto en espaol. In an amazing day of racing Brad Kahlefeldt returned to Geelong and defended his title at the Australian Triathlon Championships in front of a crowd of almost 10,000 spectators. Emerging star Erin Densham also claimed victory this afternoon in the elite womens race, making in three wins in a row for the 22 year old.

In a sprint to the finish defending champion Brad Kahlefeldt retained his title in this afternoon’s championships crossing the line in a time of 01:52:19. Following Kahlefeldt in second place was Queenslands Courtney Atkinson in 1:52:23 and New Zealands Bevan Docherty finished in third place with a time of 01:52:25

The start of the mens swim leg contributed to a break away pack of around 25 competitors, with Dylan McNeice of New Zealand and Queenslands Josh Amberger clearing the transition and hitting the cycle leg in first and second place with David Dellow third.

However the young leaders were soon swallowed up in the front pack which established a solid lead early in the cycle leg and continued to hold the position by almost 40 seconds for much of the 40km ride.

The front pack initially contained a whos who of the elite field with the major exception being Brad Kahlefeldt who remained with the second pack.

There were two international stand-outs in the cycle leg, Marcos Albert of Estonia and Pierre Dorez of France managed to break away six laps into ride with both Europeans clearing the final transition and moving into the run leg with an apparent solid lead.

However it was Kahlefeldt who made his intentions clear upon clearing transition in third place with the defending champion determined for a win.

Simon Thompson, Bevan Docherty, Brendan Sexton and Courtney Atkinson were all ready for a challenge swiftly clearing the transition and joining the three runners out front.

It was not until the final stages of the cycle leg that the second pack managed to merge and push me up into a better position. said Kahlefeldt this afternoon

I have to say that the work that happened between the guys in the second pack today was absolutely amazing. I couldnt have worked my way to the front if I didnt have the support of some of the younger guys like Jamie Rhodes and Clayton Fettell, it was terrific.

I felt terrible today and it wasnt really until the final cycle lap that I got my legs back,  I only started feeling better as we began to pick up the pace heading towards the finish

The sprint really worked for me and it seems like these days that most races tend to be a sprint finish.

I now have less than three weeks to prep for Mooloolaba but at the end of the day its Australian team selection for Beijing that I am working towards, said Kahlefeldt.

In the womens race Sara McLarty from the US powered through the swim to lead into and out of transition, ahead of Annabel Luxford from Australia. New Zealanders Andrea Hewitt and Nicky Samuels followed just ahead of Liz Blatchford to form a group of 3 in pursuit of McLarty and Luxford. By lap 3 the lead group of five merged to protect their claim for the win.

The chase group of 9 including Australians Erin Densham and Felicity Abram, together with Debbie Tanner from New Zealand, followed 1:30 behind the leaders.

Leading by almost two minutes the front pack including McLarty, Luxford, Hewitt and Blatchford hit the run leg with Luxford taking lead in the early stages, with a two minute lead.

Erin Densham from Australia was the first of the chase runners to put in the challenge pegging back 15 to 20 seconds each lap with Debbie Tanner from New Zealand just as keen to produce a podium finish.

By the bell lap Densham had reduced Luxfords lead to around 10 seconds, just ahead of Andrea Hewitt, and Debbie Tanner confirming a cross Tasman showdown was on.

Densham claimed her first Australian and Oceania Open crowns, ahead of Luxford who kicked on to hold off Tanner for the second position. Andrea Hewitt, Liz Blatchford filled out the top 5.

I cant believe I have made it three out three, said Densham on the finish line.

It seems like heading to a World Cup and winning is a goal that is coming closer and closer.

I really sat back in both the swim and the cycle leg, aiming to put my energy into the run leg.

The two minute lead held by Annabel did seem a little daunting but I realised at the 5km mark that I could see Debbie Tanner’s heels and I knew that I was in with a good chance, said Densham

I am really happy about today and the last months racing, I am feeling strong and happy with all my performances, said Densham.

In a race that saw a start list of 70 elite male competitors and 23 top females from Australia, New Zealand and the world, the points from this event also contribute to the ITU (International Triathlon Union) points system contributing vital Oceania World Cup points to Australia and New Zealands tally, heading towards selection for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
