Oceania Champs Preview

This Sunday, international athletes will have the opportunity to test the waters of this year’s Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship Grand Final in Gold Coast, Australia at the Gold Coast OTF Triathlon Oceania Championships.
Headlining the men’s field are Australian Olympians Brad Kahlefeldt and Courtney Atkinson. Kahlefeldt goes into the race as defending champion but has no illusions of claiming his fourth title; instead he is hoping to place in the top ten after a five month layoff following hip surgery.
The former world number one had bone shaved from his right hip, an injury which plagued his Olympic campaign in Beijing. Following the surgery the 28-year-old endured a long and painful rehab process and is now taking his first steps towards reclaiming the world number one spot.
“I’m pain free for the first time in a long time and although I’ve done a lot of work at the AIS to get back into race shape it would be a huge ask to win,” stated the multiple world cup winner Kahlefeldt. “This is just the first phase in what I’m hoping will be a big year for me.”
Courtney Atkinson who claimed his fourth Australian Sprint title last weekend in Hobart will be hard to beat this weekend despite it being over the longer Olympic distance (1.5km swim, 40km cycle, 10km run). Atkinson managed to only just edge out team mate Dan Wilson, who will be hoping to turn the tables on Atkinson this weekend.
“I’m not really expecting too much of myself this early on in the season and this race will be good preparation for Mooloolaba [ITU World Cup] at the end of the month,” said Atkinson.

Great Britain’s Stuart Hayes who finished second to Kahlefeldt last year is sure to feature among the medals again. Hayes is currently based on the Gold Coast training.
“Realmente no esperaba mucho de mí al inicio de temporada y esta carrera será una buena preparación para Mooloolaba [Copa del Mundo ITU] a finales de mes,” dijo Atkinson.
The women’s field will be a wide open contest without any of the Australian or New Zealand A-team attending. Most have chosen to sacrifice this race in preparation for the Mooloolaba ITU Triathlon World Cup on March 29 and then launch into the new World Championships series which kicks off in Singapore on May 9/10.
Japan’s Kiyomi Niwata will be the most experienced in the field, the three time Olympian lives and trains on the Gold Coast and is acclimatized to these conditions and familiar with the course.
Her main opposition will come from Chilean up-and-comer Barbara Riveros-Diaz, Nicky Samuels of New Zealand, under23 gold medalist Daniela Ryf of Switzerland and former junior world champion Kirsten Sweetland of Canada. Sweetland recently moved to the Gold Coast to train and this will be her first race back after an injury-plagued 2008.
The 2009 Gold Coast ITU Triathlon Oceania Championships is part of the Gold Coast Triathlon – Luke Harrop Memorial and is expected to draw over 2,000 entries and 10,000 spectators.

Start of 2008 Wellington OTF Triathlon Oceania Championships

Este domingo, atletas internacionales tendrán la oportunidad de probar las aguas del lugar donde se disputará la Gran Final del campeonato del Mundo ITU Dextro Energy en Gold Coast, Australia, en los Campeonatos de Oceanía de Triatlón OTF de Gold Coast.
Entre los favoritos en la categoría masculina están los australianos Brad Kahlefeldt y Courtney Atkinson. Kahlefeldt llega a la carrera como el defensor del campeonato, pero no tiene esperanzas de alcanzar su cuarto título; aunque espera acabar entre los diez primeros tras cinco meses fuera de competición por su operación de cadera.
Al ex número uno del mundo le han limado su cadera derecha, una lesión que ha asolado su campaña Olímpica en Beijing. Tras la operación, el triatleta de 28 años de edad ha sufrido un largo y doloroso proceso de recuperación y ahora está dando los primeros pasos para volver a alcanzar el número uno del mundo.
“Por primera vez en mucho tiempo no tengo dolor y aunque he trabajado mucho en el AIS para regresar en un gran estado de forma, sería una osadía plantearme la victoria,” declaró el múltiple ganador de la copa del mundo Kahlefeldt. “Esta es la primera fase del que espero sea un gran año para mí.”
Courtney Atkinson quien consiguió su cuarto título Australiano de distancia Sprint el pasado fin de semana en Hobart será un duro rival a batir este fin de semana, a pesar de tratarse de distancia Olímpica (1,5km natación, 40km ciclismo, 10 km de carrera a pie). Atkinson consiguió superar por muy poco a su compañero de equipo Dan Wilson, quien en esta ocasión espera cambiar las tornas y ganar a Atkinson este fin de semana.
El británico Stuart Hayes que terminó segundo el año pasado tras Kahlefeldt, seguro que se encuentra otra vez en la lucha por las medallas. Hayes se encuentra en la actualidad entrenando en Gold Coast.
En la categoría femenina la carrera estará muy abierta ya que no estarán presentes ninguna triatleta de los equipos A de Nueva Zelanda ni de Australia. La mayoría han renunciado a esta carrera para preparar la Copa del Mundo de Triatlón ITU de Mooloolaba el 29 de Marzo y después iniciar las nuevas series de los Campeonatos del Mundo que comienzan el 9/10 de Mayo.
La japonesa Kiyomi Niwata será la triatleta más experimentada, la tres veces Olímpica vive y entrena en Gold Coast y está aclimatada a las condiciones y familiarizada con el recorrido.
Su principal oposición vendrá de la prometedora chilena Barbara Riveros-Diaz, de la neozelandesa Nicky Samuels, de la medallista de oro Sub23 Daniela Ryf de Suiza y de la ex campeona del mundo junior Kirsten Sweetland de Canadá. Sweetland se ha trasladado recientemente a entrenar a Gold Coast y esta será su primera carrera después de un 2008 plagado de lesiones.
Los Campeonatos de Oceanía de Triatlón ITU de Gold Coast 2009 forman parte del Triatlón de Gold Coast – Memorial Luke Harrop y se espera que haya más de 2.000 inscripciones y más de 10.000 espectadores.
