Post reigns again at Winter Champs

Norwegian Arne Post won the ITU Winter Triathlon World Championship for the second time, successfully defending his title. Frenchman Nicolas Lebrun, last year’s bronze medalist, won the silver this time around and current European Champion Andreas Svanebo of Sweden took the bronze.

After the crowd was still buzzing over German Sigrid Mutscheller’s historic win in the women’s race, Florian Holzinger had the crowds cheering as he led the men into the first transition after the 7.5-kilometer run. The chase pack included Post, Lebrun and Austrian Heinz Planitzer. Svanebo was back in the third group, a minute and 20 seconds behind.

On the gruelling 12-kilometer mountain bike course, Holzinger was alone in front and owned a 50-second lead but was being hunted down by the strong chase pack. Svanebo continued to lag behind, now 90 seconds back in the second chase group.

The race turned in T2 as Holzinger came off the bike with a one minute lead. But when he left transition, that lead had shrunk to less than 15 seconds. It’s not an ideal scenario for Holzinger as Post has put in a lot of training in cross-country skiing in the last few months and is certain not to stumble in the race’s final leg. The extra work pays off for Post as he surges past the Holzinger and after the second lap has built a 70-second lead. The defending champion tears up the ski course and cruises to the finish line for his fourth World Championship overall, he previously won the junior and under23 titles in addition to two elite titles. Lebrun hangs on for silver while Svanebo comes back hard in the final last two laps to take the bronze. Holzinger drops back to eighth place. Two-time World Champion Sigi Bauer of Austria suffered a flat tire in the first lap of the bike leg and was forced to pull out.

“It was a very good race for me. I had a good run and I had a good group on the bike so I did not have to use that much energy. Nobody followed me on the cross-country skiing, that’s where I’m at my best so it’s good for me when it’s a tough ski course and in tough conditions so I had a very good day,” said Post.

“It was a good race but I didn’t start very well because normally I’m a good runner but today on the run I was not very confident. At the end of the run I was a little bit better but not very good. After I started the bike I was bit better and finally I was very good in the skiing so I’m very happy to be second and get another podium,” said silver medalist Lebrun.

In the Under23 men’s race, Peter Viana won gold in a commanding performance. It was the step up he was looking for after his silver from last year. Gjermund Nordskar made it a gold-silver outing for Norway while Peter Mosny got Slovakia on the podium with the bronze.

Arne Post coasts to his fourth World Championship
Arne Post cruzó la meta para su cuarto Campeonato del Mundo

El noruego Arne Post ha ganado el Campeonato del Mundo de Triatlón de Invierno ITU por cuarta vez en su carrera, exitosamente en su defensa del título. El francés Incola Lebrun, el año pasado medallista de bronce, ha ganado esta vez la medalla de plata y el actual Campeón Europeo Andreas Svanebo de Suecia ha conseguido el bronce.

El público todavía estaba emocionado gracias a la histórica victoria de Sigrid Mutscheller en la carrera femenina, cuando Florian Holzinger hizo que la afición le aclamase al liderar la primera transición tras los 7.5 kilómetros de carrera a pie. El grupo perseguidor en el que estaba Post, Lebrun y el austriaco Heinz Planitzer. Svanebo estaba por detrás en un tercer grupo a 1 minuto y 20 segundos.

En los extenuantes 12 kilómetros del recorrido de la bicicleta de montaña, Holzinger se quedó sólo en cabeza y consiguió 50 segundos de ventaja pero estaba siendo perseguido por el fuerte grupo perseguidor. Svanebo siguió quedándose atrás, ahora a 90 segundos del grupo perseguidor.

La carrera cambió en la segunda transición en la que Holzinger se cayó de la bicicleta con un minuto de ventaja. Pero cuando salió de la transición esa ventaja se redujo a menos de 15 segundos. No era el escenario ideal para Holzinger ya que Post había entrenado mucho el esquí campo a través en los últimos meses se mostraba seguro de no tener ningún traspiés en el último segmento de la carrera. El trabajo extra le valió la pena a Post para situarse por delante de Holzinger y tras la segunda vuelta la ventaja era de 70 segundos.
El defensor del campeonato rompió la carrera en el recorrido de esquí y cruzó la línea de meta consiguiendo su cuarto Campeonato del Mundo. Lebrunse hizo con la medalla de plata mientras que Svanebo trabajó duro las dos últimas vueltas y obtuvo el bronce. Holzinger retrocedió hasta la octava posición. El dos veces Campeón del Mundo Sigi Bauer de Austria sufrió un pinchazo en la primera vuelta del segmento de la bicicleta y se vio forzado a abandonar.

“Fue una carrera muy Buena para mí. Tuve una buena carrera a pie y tuve un buen grupo en la bicicleta por lo que no tuve que gastar mucha energía. Nadie me siguió en esquí campo a través, este es mi punto fuerte y por lo que es bueno que sea un recorrido exigente y en duras condiciones, por lo que tuve un muy buen día hoy,” dijo Post.

“Fue una buena carrera pero no empecé muy bien porque normalmente soy un buen corredor pero hoy no estuve muy seguro. Al final de la carrera yo estuve algo mejor pero no bien del todo. Tras iniciar la bicicleta yo estaba algo mejor y finalmente estuve muy bien en el esquí por lo que estoy muy feliz de estar por segunda vez en el podium,” dijo el medallista de plata Lebrun.

En la carrera Sub23 masculina, Peter Viana ganó el oro con claro dominio. Dio un paso adelante tras su medalla de plata el año pasado. Gjermund Nordskar hizo el oro-plata para Noruega mientras que Meter Mosny consiguió subir a Eslovaquia con la medalla de bronce.
