Snowsill Triumphant in Ishigaki

2008 Ishigaki Women

Australian superstar Emma Snowsill added to her extensive medal count today with a win at the Ishigaki BG Triathlon World Cup. Snowsill led from start to finish claiming her eighth world cup title in a time of 2 hours 3 minutes and 11 seconds. In second place, 29 seconds behind, was fellow Aussie and Olympic hopeful Erin Densham. A further 1 minute 45 seconds back in third was young Hollie Avil of Great Britain in her world cup debut, nipping home crowd favourite Juri Ide of Japan in an exciting sprint finish. In fifth position was Canadian Kathy Tremblay.

“I just wanted to get out there and get a second hit out,” said Snowsill after her win. “I felt like I had a bit more of a plateau, not so many ups and downs. I’m really happy, two for two; what more can I ask for at this stage?”

Right from the starter’s horn, Snowsill quickly moved to the lead of the 41 women field stringing out a long line of athletes. The only women able to keep up to her were the British swimming trio of Helen Tucker, Jodie Swallow and Kerry Lang. These four would lead the entire swim while the remaining women battled it out behind. Another Aussie Olympic hopeful Felicity Abram, was caught amongst the white water of the chasers and would withdraw from the race early in the bike portion due to stomach ailments.

This lead group of four would be joined by four more at the start of the 40-kilometre hilly bike leg. This small break away was quickly caught however by a Nicola Spirig-led chase group of ten. The Swiss powerhouse single-handedly reeled in the leaders by the end of the first lap, pulling eventual medalists Densham and Avil to within striking distance. This group would efficiently conquer the 14 hills on the course, increasing the lead to over two minutes between them and the chase group, containing pre race favourites, Debbie Tanner of New Zealand and Anja Dittmer of Germany, by the second transition.

In her usual style, Snowsill would struggle through second transition to fall almost ten seconds behind, but blasted to the front in the first 500 metres and would never look back with a blistering 33:23 final 10-kilometre run split to grab top spot and her 16th career podium. Densham dug deep to pull within 30 seconds of Snowsill, at the finish to persuade Australian Olympic selectors after a slow start to the season. Densham is one of four top Australian women fighting for two remaining Olympic spots. After battling over the final five kilometres 18-year old and reigning World Junior Champion Avil of managed to nip Japan’s Ide at the line for a bronze medal in her first world cup.

La superestrella Emma Snowsill ha añadido hoy a su extensa cuenta de medallas una victoria en la Copa del Mundo de Triatlón BG de Ishigaki. Snowsill lideró la carrera de principio a fin consiguiendo su octavo título de la copa del mundo con un tiempo de 2 horas 3 minutos y 11 segundos. En segundo lugar, a 29 segundos, llegó la australina y esperanza Olímpica Erin Densham. A 1 minuto 45 segundos llegó en tercera posición la joven Hollie Avil de Gran Bretaña en su debut en la copa del mundo, superando en un emocionante sprint final a la favorita local Juri Ide Avil de Japón. En quinta posición llegó la canadiense Kathy Trembley.

“Sólo quise salir de allí con la segunda victoria,” dijo Snowsill después de su triunfo. “Necesitaba un poco más de regularidad, no tantos altibajos. Estoy muy feliz. 2 de 2, qué mas puedo pedir en esta temporada.”

Desde el comienzo, Snowsill rápidamente se puso en cabeza de las 41 mujeres estirando el grupo y formando una gran línea de atletas. Las únicas mujeres que fueron capaces de seguirla fueron el trío de nadadoras británicas formado por Helen Tucker, Jodie Swallow y Kerry Lang. Estas cuatro mujeres liderarían el segmento de la natación, mientras que las mujeres restantes luchaban por detrás. Otra esperanza Olímpica australiana Felicity Abram, se retiraría de la carrera pronto, en el segmento de la bicicleta debido a dolencias estomacales.

Al equipo de cabeza se le unirían otras cuatro atletas al comienzo de los 40 kilómetros del montañoso segmento de la bicicleta. Este pequeño grupo fue rápidamente atrapado por un grupo perseguidor de diez liderado por Nicola Spirig. La poderosa triatleta suiza alcanzó sin la ayuda de nadie a las líderes, y dejó eventualmente fuera de las medallas a Denshan y Avil. Este grupo coronaría de manera eficiente las 14 cimas del circuito, incrementando la ventaja a más de dos minutos entre ellas y el grupo perseguidor, en el que estaban las a priori favoritas Debbie Tanner de Nueva Zelanda y Anja Dittmer de Alemania, en la segunda transición.

Como es habitual, Snowsill salió de la segunda transición a 10 segundos de la cabeza, pero se situó en la primera posición en los primeros 500 metros y nunca miraría atrás con un aplastante 33:23 final en los 10 kilómetros del tramo de carrera a pie y de esta manera conseguir así subir a lo más alto del podium y el 16º sexto podium de su carrera. Densham llegó a 30 segundos de Snowsill, en la última oportunidad para convencer a los seleccionadores del equipo Olímpico australiano, tras un flojo comienzo de temporada. Densham es una las cuatro australianas que luchan por las dos plazas Olímpicas australianas. Avil se hizo con la medalla de bronce en su primera copa del mundo tras luchar en los últimos cinco kilómetros de la carrera con la japonesa Ide.
