World Triathlon

Nicola Spirig of Switzerland has just won the 2007 BG Triathlon World Cup finale in Eilat, Israel, with a finish time of 2 hours 2 minutes and 42 seconds.  After a hard fought 2007, Spirig grabs her first world cup win in the season closer. Twenty-eight seconds behind in second place was Juri Ide from Japan with her first-ever world cup podium as well.  In third, another 11 seconds down, was Annabel Luxford of Australia.

I feel absolutely great, its such a good way to finish the season, said an elated Spirig, a former Junior World and European Champion.  Im extremely happy, it was a great year for me.  I have eight top-tens in the World Cups and the bronze medal at the European Championships so I think it was a breakthrough year for me.

The extremely strong cyclist Spirig used those skills today, jumping to the lead early in the bike with 19 other women including pre-race favourites Luxford, Elizabeth May of Luxembourg, Samantha Warriner of New Zealand and Julie Ertel of the United States.  The efficient group of 20 worked together over the 40-kilometre bike course to increase their lead to two minutes on the chasers.  The three medals would be decided from this group.

Immediately out on the run course, Spirig would take off with only Japans Ide able to go with her.  Both women had their sights on their first world cup podium.  Late into the run many women began to fade as the unassumingly hard bike course began to take its toll on their legs.  This was not the case with Spirig, however, as she pulled away from Ide over the final two kilometres to cross the line first, ending the 2007 season with a bang as she catapults to sixth overall in the rankings.

Despite her best efforts, Warriner was unable to make the top nine she needed to move to second in the rankings, she finished 13th, and remains in third place in the end of the year rankings.  At the conclusion of the 2007 womens season, Portuguese superstar came away with her second BG Triathlon World Cup series crown in a row with rising Aussie, Emma Moffatt in second.

Nicola Spirig de Suiza ha Ganado la ltima prueba de la Copa del Mundo 2007 de Triatln BG en Eilat, Israel, con un tiempo de 2 horas, 2 minutos y 42 segundos. Tras una dura lucha en el 2007, Spirig consigue su primera victoria de la copa del mundo en el cierre de temporada. A 28 segundos en segundo lugar lleg Juri Ide de Japn consiguiendo su primer podium en la vida en la copa del mundo. La tercera posicin, a otros 11 segundos, fue para Annabel Luxford de Australia. 

Me siento genial, es una manera tan buena de terminar la temporada, dijo una eufrica Spirig, una pasada campeona de Europa y del Mundo Junior. Estoy sumamente feliz, ha sido un gran ao para m. Tengo ocho diez primeros puestos en las Copas del Mundo y la medalla de bronce en el campeonato de Europa, por lo que ha sido un ao de despegue para m.

Las habilidades usadas hoy sobre la bici, han hecho que pronto saltase a la cabeza en el segmento de la bicicleta con otras 19 atletas entres las que se encontraban las favoritas a priori Luxford, Elizabeth May de Luxemburgo, Samantha Warriner de Nueva Zelanda y Julie Ertel de los Estados Unidos. El eficiente grupo de 20 trabaj unido los 40 kilmetros del circuito de la bicicleta para incrementar su ventaja a 2 minutos sobre los perseguidores. Las tres medallistas salieron de este grupo.

Inmediatamente en el segmento de la carrera a pi, Spirig saldra con ventaja y tan slo la japonesa Ide fue capaz de seguirla. Ambas mujeres tenan sus miradas puestas en su primer podium de la copa del mundo. En el segmento de la carrera a pi muchas mujeres comenzaron a descolgarse debido a que el duro circuito de la bicicleta comenz a pasar factura en sus piernas. Este no fue el caso de Spirig, que se distanci de Ide en los dos ltimos kilmetros para cruzar la lnea de meta en primera posicin, terminando la temporada del 2007 dando un golpe de efecto lo que la catapulta al sexto puesto en la clasificacin general.

A pesar de sus esfuerzos, Warriner fue incapaz de finalizar entre las nueve primeras, puesto que necesitaba para ascender al segundo puesto de la clasificacin general y termin en 13 posicin por lo que se mantiene en tercera posicin en la clasificacin general.
