Successful seminar in South Africa

Event Organisers and Technical Officials gathered in Richards Bay, South Africa last week for the second ITU certification symposium of 2006. 5 countries from Africa were in attendance and were overwhelmed with the organisation and hospitality of the African Triathlon Union lead by Liesbeth Stoltz and Casper Kriel, the president of the local Zululand Triathlon Club.

Enrique Quesada, Chair of the ITU Technical Committee (better known as “Mr. Stats”) plus Gergely Markus, ITU Sport Development Officer delivered the 2 day symposium which emphasized the partnership between event organizers and technical officials with the goal of producing consistent ITU event that are:
- safe and fair
- television and spectator friendly
- satisfying for sponsors
- profitable for the LOC and National Federation
- leaving a strong legacy for the host city

The seminar was held in conjunction with the South African Triathlon Championships, which was the test event for the first ever ITU Triathlon World Cup will be held on the African continent on 11 June 2006. The participants had also the opportunity to get involved in the test event as technical official.

The participant countries will send a Technical Official for the ITU World Cup as the continuation of the program in Africa.

Funding for the seminar was made possible through joint funding by the IOC Sport Department, ITU and each National Federation.

The next ITU Event Organiser and Technical Officials Symposium will take place in Doha, Qatar on 1 - 3 March for officials from the National Federations of Asia.
