The International Triathlon Union (ITU) in conjunction with the organizing committees of the Doha and Aqaba World Cups are pleased to announce that the prize money for each event has been increased to US$100,000.  This is made possible by the ongoing commitment of the two organizing committees to successfully welcome the world of triathlon to the Middle East.

The prize money will be distributed to the top 15 men and women according to the existing ITU guidelines.

We are very excited to announce this increase as it shows how our sport continues to grow and the importance of our athletes to the entire ITU family.  says ITU Executive Director, Loreen Barnett.  We are so happy that the sacrifices that our athletes make to reach this level of competition are recognized.  The sport of triathlon moves ever forward with greater international interest from all regions of the globe.

The ITU Doha World Cup triathlon takes place on March 3rd and will provide as a test event for the 2006 Asian Games being held in Doha in December.  The race will be held on the famous Al Corniche, passing the Emir’s Palace and the Old Sook. ITU is working very closely with the Federation and its President, His Eminence Sheik Khalid Al-Thani, in order to develop triathlon in Qatar.

The ITU Aqaba World Cup triathlon will be held in the heart of the coastal city on March 10th, 2006.  Triathlon in Jordan is fully supported by His Royal Highness Prince Feisal Hussein, who is also the president of the Jordanian National Olympic Committee.
