U.S. Sweep at PanAm Champs

Two relative newcomers to the Elite triathlon world pulled upset victories today at the 2008 PATCO Triathlon Pan American Championships in the resort city of Mazatlan, Mexico. Jillian Petersen and Matt Chrobat of the United States ran away with the continental titles after thrilling break aways on the bike in both competitions surprised many top veterans who were unable to close the gap. This is the first major title for both young athletes and makes it the second year in a row for the U.S. sweep of the gold medals.

In the women’s race Petersen, who’s highest finish in an ITU race was third at the 2008 Nevis Pan American Cup a month ago, crossed the line first in a time of 1 hour 56 minutes and 36 seconds. In three short years the ex-Collegiate runner has gone from competing in her first triathlon to Pan American Champion.

“It is my first time in Mazatlan and I love this kind of weather,” said Petersen of the hot and humid conditions. “It was an amazing race, the team work with Alicia [Kaye] on the bike was fundamental.”

Petersen used her strong swimming skills to exit the water in the front group and joined an efficient lead pack of two to put almost a minute on the top runners in the field. From there the former USA Age Group champion put more time into the chasers and finished almost two minutes ahead of second place and 2008 Olympian Lauren Groves of Canada. In third was hometown favourite Adriana Fabiola Corona of Mexico, a further 40 seconds back.

In the men’s race, the 24-year old Chrabot, who’s previous best result was a second at the 2007 Kelowna Pan American Cup, comfortably finished in a time of 1 hour 47 minutes and 9 seconds, over a minute ahead of 2008 Olympian and pre-race favourite Jarrod Shoemaker from the U.S. Shoemaker, who skipped this weekend’s U.S. Olympic Trials as he has already qualified for Beijing, managed to nudge out Francisco Serrano of Mexico in a final sprint for the silver.

“I live in Virginia so I am used to these kinds of aggressive waves,” said Chrabot of the 15-foot waves greeting the athletes as they started the ocean swim. “I expect the same race in my next competition at the [Richards Bay] World Cup.”

Just as in the women’s event, Chrabot broke away early in the bike leg with only one other athlete after exiting the water in first, building his lead to insurmountable two minutes 30 seconds after the bike. From there it was a battle for second as the young American’s proven run speed ushered him to his career’s first ITU title.

Earlier in the day the younger athletes took to the beach for the Junior Championships over the same course. At the finish it was Canadian Sarah-Anne Brault and Mexican Rodrigo Gonzalez who claimed the title of Continental Champion.

In the Under23 competition it was rising star Barbara Riveros Diaz from Chile to claim the women’s title with Jeff Symonds of Canada winning the men’s race.

Dos recién llegados entre comillas a la Elite del triathlon mundial se hicieron hoy con la victoria en los Campeonatos de Triatlón Pan Americanos PATCO 2008 en la ciudad de vacaciones de Mazatlán, Méjico. Jilian Petersen y Matt Chrobat de los Estados Unidos se alzaron con los títulos continentales, en ambas competiciones tras escaparse en la bicicleta sorprendiendo a muchos veteranos favoritos que no fueron capaces de recortar la diferencia. Este es el primer título importante para estos jóvenes atletas y el segundo barrido consecutivo estadounidense en las medallas de oro.

En la carrera femenina Petersen, cuyo mejor resultado en una carrera ITU fue tercera en la Copa Pan Americana de Nevis 2008 un mes atrás, cruzó la meta primera con un tiempo de 1 hora 56 minutos y 36 segundos. En tres años ha pasado de ser ex corredora universitaria a Campeona Pan Americana de Triatlón.

“Es mi primera vez en Mazatlán y adoro estas condiciones climatológicas,” dijo Petersen de las calurosas y húmedas condiciones. “Fue una carrera asombrosa, el trabajo de equipo con Alicia [Kaye] sobre la bicicleta fue fundamental.”

Petersen utilizó sus grandes habilidades nadadoras para salir del agua en el primer grupo y formó un eficiente dúo de cabeza poniendo casi un minuto sobre las mejores corredoras. Desde ahí la campeona estadounidense de Grupo de Edad aumentó la ventaja sobre sus perseguidoras y terminó con casi dos minutos de diferencia sobre la segunda clasificada y Olímpica 2008 Lauren Groves de Canadá. En tercera posición llegó la favorita local Adriana Fabiola Corona de Méjico, a otros 40 segundos.

En la carrera masculina, Chrabot de 24 años de edad, cuyo mejor resultado anterior fue un Segundo puesto en la Copa Pan Americana de Kelowna 2007, terminó cómodamente en un tiempo de 1 hora 47 segundos y 9 segundos, con más de un minuto de ventaja sobre el atleta Olímpico en 2008 y favorito antes de la carrera Jarrod Shoemaker de los Estados Unidos, que se saltó las Pruebas Olímpica estadounidenses de este fin de semana al ya haberse clasificado para Beijing y que superó en el sprint final al mejicano Francisco Serrano para conseguir la plata.

“Vivo en Virginia por lo que estoy acostumbrado a esta clase de olas agresivas,” dijo Chrabot de las olas de cinco metros que recibían a los atletas al inicio de la natación en el océano. “Espero la misma carreraza en mi próxima competición en la Copad del Mundo [Richards Bay].”

Como sucedió en la prueba femenina, Chrabot se distanció rápidamente en el segmento de la bicicleta junto con otro atleta que salió del agua primero, consiguiendo una ventaja de 2 minutos y 30 segundos tras la bicicleta. Desde ahí fue una batalla por la segunda posición ya que el joven americano aceleró para asegurarse el primer título ITU de su carrera.

Anteriormente los atletas más jóvenes tomaron la playa para los Campeonatos Junior sobre el mismo recorrido. Al final fue la canadiense Sarah-Anne Brault y el Mejicano Rodrigo González quienes consiguieron el título de Campeón Continental.

En la Competición Sub23 fue la futura estrella Barbara Riveros Dias de Chile la que se hizo con el título femenino con Jeff mientras que Jeff Symonds de Canadá ganó la carrera masculina.
