World Cup Finale this weekend

This Saturday the curtain will be drawn on the BG Triathlon World Cup series with the 2007 finale in Eilat, the first world cup in ITU history to ever be staged in Israel.  The event will be one of the most diverse of the year with 36 different countries represented in the elite men’s and women’s fields.  Athletes will not only battle for the final world cup title of the year, they’ll also fight it out for the last remaining world cup points in an effort to move up in the rankings and grab a portion of the US$250,000 bonus pool.

In the women’s field, world number three Samantha Warriner of New Zealand aims for her third world cup title of the year.  With wins in Vancouver and Tiszaujvaros, she joins world champion Vanessa Fernandes as the only women with multiple world cups in 2007.  Warriner sits just five points behind Emma Moffatt in the rankings, but with only 8 races counted towards scoring she will lose points from her lowest scoring position 12th, 11 points, to this point. After this is taken into consideration, Sam will need 17 points; 9th position or better here to finish the year at number two and collect $30,000 from the bonus pool. But standing in her way in the Eilat event include 2005 world cup series champion Annabel Luxford, silver medalist in Des Moines and bronze medalist in Edmonton.  American Julie Ertel looks to continue her fine form after recording her first career world cup win earlier this month in Cancun.  With Olympic champion Kate Allen, Brit Andrea Whitcombe, Swiss threat Nicola Spririg, and Elizabeth May of Luxembourg all scheduled to race in Eilat, it will make for an interesting race.

The men’s field is highlighted by a few strong teams including the French, British and Russian contingents.  Great Britain sends a full men’s squad with Duathlon world champion Paul Amey, Under23 European champion Ritchie Nicholls, and Oliver Freeman, who had a pair of top-five finishes earlier this season.  The French certainly won’t have the largest team in Eilat but the dangerous trio of Cedric Fleureton, Stephane Poulat and Tony Moulai could work together to get on the podium.  World number six Alexander Brukhankov will likely wear the number one start number this weekend and hopes it helps land him on the world cup podium for the third time in his breakout season.  Recent bronze medalist in Cancun Volodymyr Polikarpenko may get the nod as the pre-race favourite.  The Ukrainian has made the world cup podium an astonishing 21 times in his career.

All local eyes will likely be on Israeli twins Ran and Dan Alterman.  Both have been on the podium in the Eilat European Cup races in 2005 and 2006 with Ran winning last year.
