Zipf, Vodickova win at Holten

Czech Radka Vodickova took her third ITU victory of 2008 while German Jonathan Zipf won the first of his career at this weekend’s Holten ITU Triathlon Premium European Cup.  The event is one of the biggest triathlon in Holland and featured a 27,000 EUR prize purse equal for men and women.  Next year Holten will host the ETU Triathlon European championships.

In the elite women’s field, it was two-time Olympian Joelle Franzmann first out of the water with Vodickova just four seconds behind.  But the 10-kilometer run proved to be the difference as Vodickova posted the fastest run split amongst the women and cruised to victory.  Last year she finished second to teammate Lenka Zemanova in what was a Czech sweep of the women’s podium.

Thirty seconds back was Franzmann who took silver.  Vendula Frintova, who was recently named to her country’s Olympic team, made it two Czechs on the podium as she came across for bronze for the second straight year.  Earlier this year Vodickova won the Brno ITU Triathlon European Cup in her native Czech Republic and won the European Duathlon Championships in Serres, Greece.

In the men’s field, a pair of Kiwis Graham O’Grady and Tony Dodds were first out of the water but only but a slim margin.  It was Zipf, the junior world championships silver medalist from 2005, who took control of the race on the run course with the fastest run time of the day to comfortably take his first career ITU title.

The real battle was for the other two podium spots as the next four men came across the finish line all within ten seconds of each other.  Russian Sergey Yakovlev grabbed silver while Youri Severin delighted the home crowds, taking bronze just four seconds behind the Russian.  Kazakh Dmitriy Gaag, who will compete in his third Olympics this August, was just off the podium in fourth place.
