2018 ITU Madrid World Cup cancelled

The 2018 ITU Madrid World Cup, due to take place in September 2018, has been canceled due to the cleaning and construction works in the lake where the swim was going to take place. Even though the local authorities have planned to finish those works during the summer, it is not confirmed that they will be able to fill it in again and have the water quality at the minimum standards for hosting an ITU event in such a short time.

“Despite our best efforts to try to find alternative solutions, and after lots of talks with the local authorities, who have given the Spanish Federation all the support and options, we have decided to cancel the race for this year, since it’s not confirmed that we can offer all the athletes the maximum guarantees for a world-class level event as we always do and have been doing for the last years”, said Spanish National Federation Secretary General, Alicia García.

The local authorities have given the Spanish Federation all the support to host again the Madrid World Cup in 2019, in this case with a totally new lake, for much delight of all international athletes.

ITU is currently in talks with other National Federations and local organisers to try to substitute this event for another World Cup on the same weekend, which will be announced in short time.

Also, ITU wants to announce that the 2018 ITU Sarasota World Cup, set to take place on October 13-14, will be raced over in a Sprint format instead of Olympic distance.

The second-tier events for ITU, World Cups, will have a new and revamped calendar in 2018, with now 16 races across the globe. The World Cup 2018 season started in February with the Cape Town event, and moved in March to Mooloolaba for the Oceania leg of the circuit. With one more race to come in the next week, in New Plymouth (New Zealand), the World Cup season will finish in November in Miyazaki, with all kinds of scenarios for races in Sprint, Olympic and Semi-finals and Final formats.
