Ibiza Multisport Championships: Day 5

Wednesday will see the mountain bikes wheeled out for the first of the cross action at the World Triathlon Multisport Championships Ibiza and it’s a spectacular off-road course that awaits in San Antonio. Juniors start at 11h, followed by the Paras at 11.15h. One hour later the Elites will take the stage, and then at 14.14h is time for Age Groupers to show their skills. Check on this map of the course if you want to go and cheer for the athletes!

The opening 5.8km run, in the cross duathlon, will take the athletes through the lower forest before coming out onto the rocky waterfront, providing some tricky trainer terrain requiring full attention as they head back along the coastal paths towards transition. Onto the bikes, the climb takes in a variety of surfaces, obstacles and ramps before things take a turn into the upper forest where the contrast between snaking dirt tracks and rubble-strewn rocks will test the very best of them. Two laps and 20km later, there’s another rocky 3km run to the tape.

“I felt pretty strong from the beginning. I felt good on the run and like i could push on the bike and the last run was easy. There are some tricky sections on the bike but I really like it, it was the perfect course. The parts near the sea are pretty hard but it’s perfect course. I don’t usually race cross duathlon but I’ve always ridden a mountain bike so I felt like I could give it a go. I will also do the cross triathlon on Friday,” said Oscar Lilja, junior cross duathlon world champion in Ibiza.
