ITU opens bids for key events 2020-2022

The International Triathlon Union has opened the bidding processes for the 2020 Paratriathlon World Series, 2020 Winter World Championships and World Cups and 2022 World Multisports Championships.

“Hosting internationally renowned ITU events once again offers major cities the opportunity to showcase themselves to the world thanks to our multisports formats’ unique ability to utilise their landmarks within the structure of the course,” said ITU President Marisol Casado. “One of the great things about the racing calendar is the opportunity to work with different Local Organising Committees to deliver challenging courses that highlight the world’s great regions, and we look forward to doing so again after the latest round of bids.”

“Our host-cities are guaranteed a huge worldwide audience via on-site local and international media coverage. The ITU website attracts over 24 million page views a year and ITU social media channels have a combined audience of over half a million followers, and with higher-than-average engagement across all platforms we can showcase not only world-class racing, but the very best of our host cities.”

Hosting also provides opportunities for councils, local government and business to deliver community-wide initiatives and programmes to promote the important social and personal values of sport and enjoy the positive association with the growing triathlon family.

Cities interested in hosting 2020 Paratriathlon World Series races, the 2020 Winter World Championships and World Cups and the 2022 World Multisport Championships can find the bid guidelines and submission of bids deadlines on the ITU website here:

The ITU paratriathlon calendar includes the Paratriathlon World Championships, which in 2020 will be one event running separately from the ITU World Championships; the Paratriathlon World Series with 2-4 events worldwide that can be combined with a World Triathlon Series event or ran independently, but being maximum 1 per continent; and the Paratriathlon World Cups, 8-10 events worldwide that can be combined with another ITU event or ran independently.

With the goal set for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, paratriathletes will compete to secure points on the rankings, as well as trying to qualify for a spot at the World Championships.

ITU is also welcoming cities interested in hosting the 2020 Winter Triathlon World Championships and a new format that will be added to the calendar that same year: the Winter Triathlon World Cups.

Cities interested in the 2020 Multisport World Championships will see their proposed host city or region welcoming the Duathlon, Aquathlon, Cross Triathlon and Long Distance Triathlon World Championship races contested over a ten-day celebration in 2022. With both elite and mass participation races included in the event, it is expected to attract upwards of 2500 age group athletes, in addition to their families and support teams.

A city could potentially benefit from 45,000 visitor nights with the average visitor expected to stay a minimum of 5.6 nights, with the races set to be contested over two weekends. Ideal for resort towns with access to challenging terrain, the races will be broadcast and covered internationally, bringing global exposure to the city.
