Mooloolaba looking 'Swell'

The likelihood of a big swell at Mooloolaba is not daunting for race favourites Emma Moffatt and Brad Kahlefeldt, in fact both broke into wide grins at the prospect of a big surf for Sundays opening ITU World Cup race on Australias Sunshine Coast.

While some of the Europeans and those less experienced in surf beach swimming are eyeing the swim on Sunday with some trepidation, Moffatt and Kahlefeldt shared the same view of bring it on when speaking at the official ITU press conference today (Friday).

Im looking forward to it, said Moffatt, who has a surf life saving background.

I grew up in these sorts of conditions so no, the waves dont bother me. If anything it mixes the race up a little and changes the complexion of the way it might play out.

I think it is part and parcel of racing on the World Cup circuit, you travel to different places and experience different conditions. We are used to the waves down here but have to go to some places in Europe and face flat freezing water.

Kahlefeldt similarly was upbeat when talking about the possibility of catching a few waves back into the beach.

Bring it on; Id love to see a five meter swell to be honest. I am not a great pool swimmer; Im better suited to open water so these conditions are probably better suited to us Aussies.

Every swim on the World Cup circuit is different in some way and this is part of what makes this race so tough, you never get an easy swim. I wish every race was like this.

Moffat said the chance of a small breakaway out of the water increases in tougher conditions.

If there is some swell and a bit of chop then the chance of a few small breakaways occurring goes up. Small groups might develop if the stronger swimmers can get away.

Moffatt and Kahlefeldt were not alone in their keenness for a decent swell on Sunday, Kiwis Kris Gemmell and Debbie Tanner were equally enthused by the prospect of a few waves to sort out the field early in Sundays race.

Last years number two ranked athlete on the World Cup circuit Felicity Abram (AUS) was not quite as upbeat as her compatriots, hinting that she may not yet make the start line on Sunday.

I have been suffering from a virus for a few weeks and am not completely recovered. But being here in amongst the hype gives you a lift so I am hopeful. I will see how I wake up on Sunday morning, make a decision and see how Ill go.

Surf’s up on the Mooloolaba beach
