New-comer Bjornstad is champion
Winter triathlon new-comer Tor-Halvor Bjornstad of Norway was victorious today at the 2009 ITU Winter Triathlon World Championships in Gaishorn, Austria. This was the first world championship win for the former biathlon athlete. Bjornstad had to overcome team mate and reigning champion Arne Post in the closing stages to claim his first victory in only his second ever attempt at winter triathlon.
The conditions stayed the same for the elite and under23 mens race. In the early stages of the run, pre-race favourite Arne Post set the pace and only the Italian, Alessandro De Gasperi was able to follow him. A small group of five formed behind the two leaders almost 40 seconds down including Italys Daniel Antonioli. Bjornstad and former champion Sigi Bauer would by their time on the run waiting for the bike and ski, where they are strongest.
Bjornstad showed is prowess on the mountain bike course, taking the lead over Post and Bauer by the time the three entered the second transition. But the newcomer Bjornstad again lost the lead after a long transition.
In the early segment of the cross-country ski Post took the lead over from Bauer, but Bjornstad was chasing quickly. He passed Bauer on the first lap of eight and Post on the fifth to crown a new champion in Gaishorn. Post finished second behind his team mate while Antonioli managed to catch Bauer and finish third.
I used to be a biathlon skier, but when I started to work I could not train enough for shooting, but I really liked mountain biking, said Bjornstad. I am not a good runner, but when I can keep my head cool, and try not to get too tired on the run I have good legs for the rest of the competition. The conditions were fine, but it was difficult that you are overheated on the run get a bit cold on the bike with the wind. On the ski I really struggled, because I was very tired already. This is the second winter triathlon for me, I dont know yet my future in this sport.
Slovakia also gained a World Champion title with Peter Mosny winning the u23 category. Russias Dmitriy Bregeda finished second with Johan Noraker Nossen of Norway in third.
For the junior men, European champion Felix Waldhuber of Austria won the gold. Vit Zahula of Czech Republic and Pavel Yakimov of Russia finished second and third, respectively.
