The first competition of the ITU Triathlon European Cup calendar gets underway in Portugal, this weekend.  All eyes will be on local hero Vanessa Fernandes, as she makes her return to competition this weekend after recovering from a fracture to her clavicle.

The Triathlon European Cup marks the return of top level international competition to Portugal, after successfully hosting the European Triathlon Championships in Lisbon last year.  Quarteira will welcome over one thousand age group triathletes who will race alongside 71 elite men and 40 elite women.

There is much anticipation around the return of Vanessa Fernandes, as the Olympic silver medallist returns after a two month layoff with a fractured collar bone, which she received during training. Fernandes will use Quarteira as a test of her fitness in advance of the opening Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship Series event in Tongyeong. Tongyeong should see the battle between Fernandes and Emma Snowsill resume where it left off in Beijing. Snowsill like Fernandes has been suffering with an injury received in the off season, and missed the opening World Cup of the season in Mooloolaba

In the men’s competition, the pre race favourite looks to be three time European Triathlon Champion, Fréderic Belaubre of France. Other top contenders include Dmitry Polyansky, Igor Sysoev and the brothers Ivan and Denis Vasiliev, just four of the fifteen Russian athletes that will compete in Quarteira. The French team includes the prodigious young talent of World and European Junior Champion Vincent Luís, who will be looking to make an impression on the elite field.

The Quarteira ITU Triathlon European will count towards the ITU points list and is the last qualifying competition to the first stage of Dextro Energy Triathlon- ITU World Championships which will take place in Tongyeong, South Korea, on 2 and 3 May.

Live timing of the elite races will be available on the Portuguese Federation Website - www.federacao-triatlo.pt, will be possible to follow the men and women’s competition in real time.
